Creating the Box in Maya was meant to be a simple task, However it took me 4/5 Attempts to get a 3D model I was happy with, to take forward to the unwrapping stage and then from here take it into Photoshop for Texturing. I started by creating a simple square plane in Maya, Extruding this and using the scale tool to create the framework of the create and then using the extrude tool again I created the Indent. As shown in the image Below (However at this point it was just one of these faces, that had been modeled. The image below is a final screen grab before i start texturing)
The next step was to create the UV layout for the face of the crate I had created. I Decided that Instead of Unwrapping this model individually i would use Create UV's Based on Camera, From the front view. This would give me the basic shape of the create. Then all that is left is to use the unfold tool in the UV editor to help define the UV's more.
The next step was to create a simple, Handpainted wooden texture using Photoshop and a graphics tablet. The resolution I had chosen for the texture was a 256x256, A standard smaller resolution that can be used for smaller props such as crates/The first step was blocking out a basic color for the base of the wood .Then using the UV Background I painted in all the 'Defined' Planks of wood and detailing such as joints. The next job was to draw in a basic grain, and using Layer FX tools in Photoshop to help emphasize shading on the crate, final results below (Models + Texture then Texture)
If i was to do this task again, Which i may do in the future of this semester, i would spend more time customizing the brush presets and creating the overall wood texture, as i feel that this piece of work is below a standard i am happy with, However this could be attributed to my lack of confidence using a graphics tablet.
